SC-05-02 meeting report, Berlin, 2014-04

Report of the meeting of the SC-05-02 Working Group on Audio Connectors of the SC-05 Subcommittee on Interconnections, held in Berlin, 2014-04-28

The meeting was convened by SC-05 chair John Woodgate.

The agenda and the report of the previous meeting held in New York, 2013-10-18, were accepted as written.

Projects assigned to this group but not mentioned here had no action requested or required - see www.aes.org/standards/meetings/project-status.cfm for details.

Open projects

AES14-R - Review of AES14-1992 (r2009): AES standard for professional audio equipment - Application of connectors, part 1, XLR-type polarity and gender
It was agreed to reaffirm the standard but not to go as far as recommending stabilization.

Development projects

AES-X011: Fiber-Optic Audio Connections: Connectors and Cables Being Used and Considered for Audio
In view of the age of this project and the lack of progress, it was agreed to propose that the project be retired. This does not prevent the submission of a new Project Initiation Request. It was commented that the current draft text is very out-of-date.

AES-X123: XL Connectors to Improve Electromagnetic Compatibility
Scope: To specify new connectors with improved termination of shields at radio frequencies, improved connections of their shells with mating connectors, and low-pass filtering to minimize the transmission of radio frequency signals. A secretariat draft was posted 2013-11-13. No comments have been received, so this draft is promoted to PWD. Unless this group comments to the contrary within 30 days, it will be proposed for publication (PCFC).

AES-X222 - New audio data connector
Scope: to specify basic dimensions and application details for two- and four-contact circular connectors including a circumferential shield, used for balanced interconnections of sound system components for professional audio, commercial, recording, broadcast and similar applications, carrying either analog or digital signals.

An initial draft has been posted to the working group document site. Members agreed to progress the draft as soon as possible.

Liaisons

No liaison matters arose.

New projects

M. Williams reviewed his submission for improved connectors for multichannel microphones. After a long discussion, Williams was invited to submit a project initiation request (PIR).

New business

There was no new business.

The next meeting will be scheduled in conjunction with the AES 137th Convention in Los Angeles, CA., US., 9 to 12 October 2014.
