The meeting was convened by chair K. Brandenburg.
The agenda and the report of the previous meeting held in Berlin, 2004-05-07, were approved without changes or additions.
Development Projects
AES-X074: Recommended Practices for Internet Audio Quality Description (IAQUAD)
The draft still requires the list of audio test items that are needed to conduct a test according to the drafted procedures. The list should contain a broad range of audio material and, at the same time, some critical items for audio codecs. Audio material like the EBU Sound Quality Assessment Material (SQUAM), commercial recordings, materials especially prepared for testing purposes, and public domain audio material would be desirable. Attempts to obtain such a list have so far been unsuccessful.
The International Federation of the Phonographic Industry (IFPI) earlier sent out a call for audio material nominations because they are aware of the problem that there is no high quality test material available. Unfortunately they did not receive the desired feedback.
A new alternative is sought through the EBU. They also did comprehensive tests on audio coding and put together their list of critical material also referring to SQUAM etc. At a previous EBU/AIM meeting in Ilmenau, Germany, the problem had been discussed and the EBU had agreed to provide their list for SC-06-04. This list had not been received by the time of the SC-06-04 meeting the but Brandenburg and I. Lehrke will pursue this. R. Chalmers (AES) will also formally request the list from the EBU.
When the list is received from the EBU it will be passed to the Paul Jessop of the IFPI to arrange clearance of this material for general testing purposes. It may not be necessary to compile the material on a CD; an acceptable alternative would be to identify commercially available material unambiguously.
Once the test material is defined there might be a need to adjust clause 6 in the Project AES-X74 draft document.
The draft should also contain a reference sentence that makes it clear to use rather the AES-X74 scale than any other scale. The sentence should be more normative to put the emphasis on the high quality to the AES reference so it can not be used in the negative to differentiate between quality and AES-X74 quality. M. Yonge agreed to phrase such a sentence and will add it to the draft.
Liaisons
It was planned to seek consultation with ITU-R group WP6Q and EBU group B/AIM on the IAQUAD document. That has not been done yet because for ITU to officially look at something it needs to be officially offered. Once the document is finalized and includes the list of test items it will be sent. The document can be shared without finalizing the formatting but it has to have the list of test items. The document will be send to both mentioned groups.
New Projects
No new projects were proposed. The SC-06-04 will probably be moved to another project group after AES-X74 is closed.
New Business
There was no new business.
The next meeting will be held in conjunction with the AES 118th Convention in Barcelona, in 2004-05.
