This project was proposed by Mark Yonge, chair of working group SC-02-08. It was approved under our rules by Subcommittee SC-02 and assigned to the SC-02-08 Working Group on Audio-File Transfer and Exchange.

TITLE AES-X162, Amendment to AES31-2, File-size extension using the "RF64" technique
SCOPE This amendment to AES31-2 provides a method of extending audio files beyond the limits set by the RIFF Wave format. It uses the "RF64" technique to permit 64-bit file addressing to accommodate longer recording times and multiple channels in a single file.

RATIONALE

The methodology is based on three assumptions: The current AES31-2 is based on RIFF Wave files which have a maximum file-size limit of 2 GB (or 1 GB, depending on computer operating-system implementation). The RF64 technique will permit arbitrarily large file sizes while maintaining backward compatibility for files smaller that, say, 1 GB. This technique has been adopted by the EBU and is in active use.

WHO BENEFITS? All users of recorded digital audio in file format.
WHY AES? AES members have the necessary expertise, and already publishes the parent AES31-2 standard.
