AES British Section lectures - June 2005
Attractions of DSD
Mike Story, Data Conversion Systems (dCS), Cambridge, UK
DSD is the Sony/Philips single bit data format used for SACDs. It has a number of attractions as a delivery format to the consumer, and allows some interesting tradeoffs. These are not all exploited as much as they could be at present. However, working with the format to prepare material - from initial recording, through editing to final mastering - introduces some other issues and things to beware of, and one of the current ways of sorting these out is to use DXD for all but the final stage. The relationship between DSD and DXD, and the attractions of using this approach will be discussed.
