Past Event: AES SGS Research Colloquium #11: Evaluation of Pinna Point Cloud Alignment by Means of Non-Rigid Registration Algorithms

November 16, 2021 at 5:00 pm

Location: Zoom virtual Meeting (5pm Central European Time / Germany time zone)

Moderated by: Rafael Kassier

Speaker(s): Katharina Pollack

For more than two decades, head-related transfer functions (HRTFs) have been calculated numerically. For the numerical calculation, the three-dimensional representation of the individual pinnae geometry is required. The simple, user-friendly geometry acquisition for HRTF calculation is still current research topic, with the difficulty being the correct representation of the complex biological structure of the pinna.

In this talk, we present an approach relying on a non-rigid registration of a generalised high-resolution pinna point cloud to a noisy but listener-specific pinna point cloud. We will discuss various registration algorithms for their robustness with respect to perturbations in the noisy pinna point cloud. The results of the registrations are analysed both at a geometric level using the Hausdorff distance for spatial accuracy, and at a psychoacoustic level using an auditory model of sound localisation.

The Presenters

Katharina Pollack - Austrian Academy of Sciences

Katharina Pollack studied electrical engineering sound engineering at the Technical University and the University for Music and Performing Arts Graz and graduated in November 2019. Since March 2020, she has been a doctoral candidate at the Acoustics Research Institute at the Austrian Academy of Sciences. She is working on the modelling of external ears and the simulation of spatial hearing. She is a board member of the Austrian Acoustics Association, the Austrian section of the Audio Engineering Society, the Austrian section of the IEEE and its affinity group “Women in Engineering”.

The Meeting Format: We will be hosting this meeting using Zoom. After registering, you will receive a confirmation email containing information about joining the webinar. For most participants, audio and video are muted during the presentation. In the discussion they can be unmuted (indicated by the raised hand function). This will be explained again at the beginning of the meeting. For a better quality we suggest to use a headset with microphone. The presentation will be recorded. By turning on your camera you are consenting for your image to be used in a photograph of the event.

Other Business: There will be an open discussion after the talk.
