I. Building a Studio on a Budget
A. 1st Step - Demolition
1. Get rid of most things within space you're converting
a) Carpet
b) Shelving
c) etc.
B. 2nd Step - Building a Control Room
1. Isolate Studio from Control Room
2. Make sure power is available for CR and capable of being shut off
3. Avoid 90 degree angles if possible - add diagonal walls to 90 degree
corners
4. Ensure ?oor is level without adding resonance (can ?ll gaps with sand to
get rid of resonance)
a) Build up with 2x4 and plywood or particle board
5. Flooring - think of acoustic properties of different materials (How do you
want to mix [live vs. dampened])
a) Carpet - deadens really live rooms (can use thin carpet for little less
dampening)
b) Laminate, tile, and wood will have the most re?ections
6. Get rid of Direct Re?ections and standing waves with acoustic pads
a) foam, carpeting, ?berglass, etc
b) Sit in listening location and move mirror around room until speakers
are visible to locate direct re?ection locations
7. Build a door to Studio Proper
a) Make sure to isolate door into CR from anywhere else
8. Building a Dividing Wall between CR and Studio Proper
a) plenty of insulation to acoustically isolate; ?berglass insulation,
particle foam, particle board between drywall
b) run all cabling before putting up drywall and insulation (or you'll never
get it run correctly)
C. Building an Iso Booth
1. Avoid 90 degree angles (like CR)
2. Line with plenty of insulation from other rooms (Mineral Wool works really
well)
3. Design with instrument size in mind
4. Make walls with MDF and acoustic paneling of some sort
5. Plywood works well for exterior of walls because it's durable
6. Drywall works for interior walls
a) Fill in gaps with drywall mud
7. Carpet or ?oor inside
8. Cover interior walls with moving blankets
9. Ensure door to iso booth seals in some way
10. Using a Live Sound Snake is a good way to get Mic sources to CR
11. You can build a portable Iso Booth
a) collapsable plexiglass panels
b) clouds to put on ceiling to isolate more
c) use blankets to deaden if necessary
D. Live Room
1. Make sure vibe of room is good
a) lighting
b) color
c) pictures, paintings, etc.
d) wood panelling
2. All acoustic principles apply here too
