Summary

Last year, Scott Porter, Jeff Whalen, and Dan Domme developed a demonstration project that would allow students to build a moving-coil loudspeaker out of craft materials for only $5. After presenting and publishing the work, it was time to put the idea to the test and organize our first project-building event!
Upon completion of the event, section members produced their very own working shoebox loudspeaker, which can reproduce sound fairly well (for only $5!) when hooked up to an amplifier. Although you will not want to use this as one of your main bookshelf speakers, it is quite a conversation piece, and an excellent way to illustrate how loudspeakers work.
