Summary

On-location sound for cinema is one of the most important elements to achieve favorable continuity in cinema production. However, very often it is not given the proper attention and we find that in many movies a sound replacement has to be done and it could have been saved. Of this and many other things Mr. Galileo Galaz spoke at the monthly conference of the Section that took place at ARTeria SGAE in Mexico City, last August 30th.
Galileo is a professional dedicated to direct sound and sound design for films, with a degree in Communication with a specialty in Cinematography, having worked in more than 15 movies and with a vast experience as a teacher in sound and sound design in several universities.
Among the concepts that Galileo shared with us this time, was the importance to take all necessary precautions to record clean audio during the filming rather than wasting time and money later during audio post production. We should never believe that is possible to fix a bad recording.
As cinema is focused on voice, dialogs always have to be very clean.
You have to find the best spot and place for the lavaliere microphones and you have to know how to deal with people who is not an actor, for instance when doing a documentary.
Within the location, you have to find a suitable acoustics space for the best sound pickup.
It is possible to record sounds in mono or 3 channels, so when you get to post production you have more material to work from.
You have to make sure there is a good synchrony with the film speed.
Everything mentioned above is very important and only some general considerations for the best direct sound recording, but the most important thing is to value the sound technician work and explain why it is important to take care of audio, without a doubt this tip will guarantee the presence of the technician in the set.
