Summary

Benj Kanters of Columbia College provided insight into the most important piece of gear we have; our ears. Benj talked about how we hear the way we do, and what is actually physically happening within the outer, middle, and inner parts of the ear. The basilar membrane, the tympanic membrane, the stapes, and etc. were discussed to inform us how these parts work together when we perceive sound at different frequencies. Also, we discussed potential hearing loss in the modern world and what we can do to change the way we listen to our surroundings.

Different types of earplugs, in ear monitors and SPL meters were passed around during the presentation. Earplugs, courtesy of Sperian, and informational pamphlets on hearing loss prevention were offered to students.

After Benj's presentation, several t-shirts and hats, as well as a pair of ATH-ANC7b Audio-Technica headphones were raffled off to AES members. Thanks Benj
