Meeting Topic: Perceptual Coding
Moderator Name: Nikolas Vitt
Speaker Name: Dr. Chris Barber
Other business or activities at the meeting: Discussed upcoming Shoebox Speaker and Sewer Speaker building parties.
Meeting Location: Room 306, Hammond Building - State College, PA, USA
This event was the first of the Spring semester for the PSU AES. Over the course of about 3 hours, Dr. Barber discussed a plethora of topics related to perceptual encoding. He discussed and gave audio examples of psychoacoustic phenomena such as "the missing fundamental". He also covered other techniques such as statistical methods which can be used to compress digital audio. He also spoke about the evolution of digital storage of media, including linear PCM and the way in which compact discs are made. Through multiple crashes (BSOD) of the classroom computer, and other technical difficulties, Dr. Barber managed to keep the interest of the group for nearly 3 hours! As always, I was impressed by the number of people of various backgrounds who attended and enjoyed the event.
