The UBC Institute for Computing, Information and Cognitive Systems includes a recording studio for research in sound. The Sound Studio consists of a recording area, control room, isolation booth, and workroom, all custom designed for supporting research in multichannel sound applications, audio installations, new interfaces for digital performance, and speech synthesis. Users come from a variety of backgrounds including Music, Electrical and Computer Enginering, Cognitive Systems, Psychology, and Visual Arts. Of particular interest is the ability to work in sixteen channels of surround sound in the control room, and up to sixty-four channels (if you have the speakers) of diffusion in the recording area.
