PRODUCTION AND RECORDING OF VOCALS
January 26th was the date of the first conference in 2010 for the Mexico Section. Hosted at Arteria, the cultural branch of SGAE (General Society of Authors and Editors), this brand new facility opened its doors to the AES members so we could enjoy the quality of their premises fitted with high quality gear all around.
Jaime "Oso" Pavon was responsible for the interesting talk on this subject. The human voice is one of the difficult elements to handle electronically either to be recorded, broadcasted or simply amplified. The human being is an expert recognizing its quality and it is our obligation as technicians is to capture and manipulate it in the best possible manner. Regrettably, often it is not given the proper importance and was the reason for this presentation, where we appreciated different examples of the chain of the different equipment used to achieve the optimal reproduction. Starting with the microphone, preamplification, equalization, compression, limiting, etc and a music sample was played at the end to summarize the talk.
Jaime decided to invite the attendees to contribute extensively sharing their experiences and making questions of how to achieve certain things, like slightly moving the microphone to accentuate or attenuate sibilance or bass response of the source.
Complemented with diagrams and pictures, a selection of microphones was displayed and demonstrated the differences of its designs; condenser, dynamic, ribbon, and its different polar patterns and how to take advantage of them.
We would like to thank Arteria and Mintel Alonso for letting us enjoy this presentation.
Francisco Miranda
Chair
