Meeting Topic: The IRIS centre and the italian computer music scene
Moderator Name: Leonardo Gabrielli
Speaker Name: Giuseppe di Giugno (retired, former director of IRCAM and IRIS), Sylviane Sapir (conservatorio Verdi di Milano), Walter Prati (conservatorio di Como)
Meeting Location: Macerata, Synth Museum in Marche
The event was organized to celebrate the history and achievements of IRIS, the research centre of Bontempi-Farfisa group that operated in the 90s, where custom ASICs were designed for both commercial instruments and a more research-oriented MARS hardware platform. For MARS, an innovative software environment was created first on Atari ST, then on Windows 95. The event was hosted within the temporary Synth Museum of the Marche region, along with several historical synthesizers designed in the last 40 years in this region. A highlight of the event was a live performance in which two MARS systems were operating, after the dedicated work of the curators who revived the old hardware.
The whole event was also streamed as a Facebook Live event.
