Summary

AES CRAS was honored to have Piers Plaskitt, Chief Executive Officer of Solid State
Logic, Inc. come in to talk to the students about networking and how to get a job in
the audio industry. First, he told the students 11 habits to live by to help them do well
in their careers: #1. Approach things different than others would approach them. #2.
Read any and all manuals you can get your hands on. #3. Shape your resume to help
you, not disqualify you. #4. Aim to be the best and go the furthest #5. Network,
network, network. #6. Respect the business card, hand yours to someone in a manner
they can read it. In addition, write to them the same day that you receive theirs.

#7 & #8. Be as prepared as possible for the interview, make sure that everyone you interact with has a favorable impression of you. #9. Follow-up, be pleasantly persistent. #10. Everyone can place plug-ins, but if you learn how to use a plug-in and what is being done to manipulate the sound, you can develop your own unique craft and skill. #11. Say yes. If you say yes something starts; if you say no, it stops right there.

To conclude, there was a short Q&A with the students. One question was "How do we
stay relevant in an ever changing industry?" to which Plaskitt responded "Be the best
intern. Be proactive." To end, Piers Plaskitt gave some encouraging words to the
students, stressing again for them to network and follow-up. Sometimes the greatest
opportunities come from being in the right place at the right time with the right
connection.
