Other business or activities at the meeting:
This year's breakoutsessions started with an extraordinary one! Every year the students' union hosts a few tutorials for introducing the freshmen to the university life, and this year for the first time the AES breakoutsession was featured as one of these tutorials. At this point we want to thank our colleagues from the student's union for this marvellous idea, we had a blast!
With 25 people in the audience (15 of them were freshmen!), we had no choice as to expand the session into the second control room to expose all visitors to a delightful experience. For the discussion we met in control room number one.
The pleasure of opening the breakoutsessions for this academic year had Malte Merdes and Philipp Merz, who presented some jazz standards they recorded during their ERASMUS semester in Ireland. Despite having a lot of equipment in stock, they decided to use fewer microphones and emphasize on their choice and positioning. For example, they used only two microphones in front of the drums (not so-called overheads) to create more a 50's drum recording than state-of-the-art. What an interesting approach!
After a short break Benedikt Brands was the second guest. He showed a stoner rock piece, letting us peek into his new solo album. The speciality of this composition was that he did not only record all the instruments himself but also PLAYED all of them as well - including playing a cello in five positions of his room to get a cello orchestra impression.
