Summary

After everyone had been settled in, AES President Neil briefed the chapter on some upcoming events, the Internship bootcamp and basic omni mic build. Both events were heavily marketed to newer cycle students due to all the beneficial information they provide to those without much audio experience prior to school.

With the numerous fresh faces in attendance, the President began a quick introduction for the new students. He asked them each to tell everyone their name, their area of interest in audio, and what they were worried about most when starting classes. As each new student answered the question, a member from a higher cycles would chime in with advice. When a student stated their area of interest, a senior would guide them to who they should talk to on campus and where they can learn more about the subject. The same was done for the new student's class woes. The AES members did their best to quell any early stress that someone might be experiencing, and made sure they were given guidance on how to manage that stress. Simple solutions like keeping an accurate calendar, reading ahead, taking weekend review classes, etc. were all brought to their attention.

The Floor was then opened to suggestions for events that could be held for the students on campus and some impressive ideas were brought to forefront. Lia suggested we could create some funny internet videos like "Things Audio Engineers Say" and the school could use them for social media sites. A new student suggest a tape splicing clinic. Recording to tape is a major pillar in the curriculum, yet not once do you ever actually get a change to splice and make cuts to the medium. Another new student Fatima brought up how few girls there are enrolled in the program and suggested an "All Girls Night" where the female student body can come together and get to know one another. Sean suggested we attend the local celebration "Taco Fest" as class. Sean would be performing and it's always nice to go out and experience live sound in the real world and out of the classroom.

This led Lia to remember she may have free tickets to an upcoming Mumford and Sons show coming to Phoenix. The room agreed we'd distribute the tickets to those they felt contributed the most to the chapter. After some brainstorming the topic of Forensic Audio was brought up and how one would go about learning more. Victoria mentioned the student Liaison David Kohr had a contact in the field and the officers should follow up on the lead. And last Lyric did some research on her own and found someone who would be willing to teach a short seminar on audio engineering "Slang Terms and Norms" in the industry. Everyone agreed they had heard teachers say things they hadn't understood at one point or another, and a class to bring everyone up to speed would be fantastic. With no further questions or suggestions, another successful meeting was adjourned.
