Meeting Topic: Holiday Screening - Unbroken
Moderator Name: John Gordon
Speaker Name: Becky Sullivan and Andrew DeCristofaro, supervising sound editors for Unbroken
Meeting Location: Folino Theater at the Dodge College of Film and Media Arts at Chapman University, Orange, CA
Continuing what has become an annual holiday tradition, the AES-LA was invited to the beautiful Folino Theater at the Dodge College of Film and Media Arts at Chapman University. There we were treated to a screening of Unbroken, followed by a discussion with the supervising sound editors, Becky Sullivan and Andrew DeCristofaro. With multiple unique locations, including the interior of a B-17 in combat, a raft stranded at sea in the South Pacific and a Japanese POW camp, the sound team faced a wide array of challenges that they were happy to discuss with us.
As has become typical for feature films these days, the soundtrack was produced with multiple release formats in mind, including conventional 7.1 and 5.1 mixes as well as Dolby Atmos and Auro 11.1. The final mix was performed on the Hitchcock dubbing stage at Universal Studios, newly outfitted with both Dolby Atmos and Auro 11.1 mixing capabilities.
