Summary

Tonight our AES had the privilege of having LAWO do a presentation of their
console the MC2 56 and inform us about their company. Michael Muller opened the
night and introduced the presenter, Jeff Stressner, who informed us about the company
and the background on how their gear is used world wide. They also brought in a small
group from the company with whom we all had a chance to speak and connect with
after the presentation.
LAWO is primarily a broadcast company from Germany, started mainly over in
Europe and now venturing into the US. Some areas of business Saturday Night Live,
ESPN, The Late Night Show, global sports events, and much more. In 2006, when the
World Cup was in Germany, LAWO created its rental company and it has become a
equipment provider for events world wide. The Olympics is one of the biggest events
that LAWO covers.
Stressner also gave us background on how their equipment is used and the
steps they follow when covering big events like the Olympics. Host broadcasting is
when there is one company at an event to cover and provide the feed, at which there is
no logos or advertisements. How it is presented to the audiences is by the broadcasting
services (rights holders) like NBC, who will use the host's feed and add there logos and
then the feed is sent to the viewers at home. LAWO has also had a huge part in
developing Ravenna Network which is a new standard similar to MADI, and this new
standard could be considered the next biggest thing since surround to the audio
industry.
After his presentation on many events that LAWO has been apart of, how they
set up, and what happens behind the scenes he did some demonstrations on the
console. We also asked questions throughout and after the presentation. Afterwards we
had some time to check out the console and talk with the presenter and a group that
came with him from the company. It was a very successful day with some great
networking opportunities. We learned an abundance about not only the LAWO company
but also some of the things that go into big events that we maybe a part of in our
futures.
