This week we were graced by recording industry legend Howie Schwartz in a meeting co-hosted by UML AES and the local Music & Entertainment Industry Student Association (MEISA) Chapter.
In front of a packed lecture hall, Howie shared his sage insights into staying relevant and afloat in the ever evolving entertainment industry. Howie's story began as a child with a knack for business and carried us through every major phase of his life. These included his studies as a bassoon student at the Eastman School of Music along with the likes of Tony Levin and Steve Gadd and eventually leaving the program to pursue his many studio ventures. Howie began his more technical career in radio broadcast as a disc jockey and with the military before launching into the post production world with the famous Howie Shwartz Recording company in New York City.
Perhaps more important than the path itself, were the themes threaded throughout the story. Howie was directed by the drive to always follow the money. This maxim allowed him to stay ahead of the curve and maintain productivity. He also convinced students to not be afraid of being fired. Fired and rejected many times throughout his career, Howie would thrive under his own direction.
Both UML AES and MEISA were both honored to have such a pioneering figure speak to our members and share his insights with us.
