Summary

Sy Potma introduced everyone to the meeting. This was the annual review of the 131st AES Convention, presented by John Vanderkooy and members of the Toronto AES executive committee.

The evening began with John's presentation. Sy provided the attendees with John's background and credentials. John gave his thoughts on over twenty papers and briefs. However, before proceeding, he opened first by discussing a London-meeting paper back from May.

After the break Ron Lynch was first to speak. He noted the convention was well attended and that "traffic was pretty steady". Some of the sessions he attended and discussed briefly included "Streaming and Encoding"; "Television Loudness and Metadata" (mentioning the CALM Act); "Loudness Wars: The Tides Have Changed" (current pop music has less dynamic range than Edison's wax cylinder!); "Lip Sync Issues"; "Pro Tools 10" (up to 256 channel, generally more quantity, HDX hardware goes to 64 bits, needs AAX plugins); and finally professional microphones for the iPhone.

Jeff Bamford discussed sessions covering "Listener Fatigue", "Fibre Optics" (with Marc Brunke of Optocore), "Facility Design", "Managing Your Broadcast Assets", and "Gobbler" a cloud service designed specifically for Professional Audio.

Bob Breen closed the evening discussing a keynote address by Dr. Charles Limb, Audiologist; and a Mastering Panel Discussion. He also mentioned PMC Speakers Room, and participated in a Technical Tour of Sear Sound.

This ended the meeting.

Sy thanked the Ryerson staff for the facilities.
