Summary

This presentation was a technical overview of IEEE 802.1x standard. Rob went over the basics of how AVB: that it is multicast (rather than dedicated point-to-point); how its networking over layer 2 offers traffic shaping, precise synchronisation, admission controls, and identification of non-participating devices. For instance, streams going through different routes would arrive at their destinations at the same time (even if one stream was more direct than another). The AVB standard scales from 100mb Ethernet to Gigabit and 10GB, and is not limited to audio/video streams. We were shown a list of manufacturers participating in the AvNu Alliance (many of them AES members). Finally, we were taken through several improvements which should be ratified this summer.
