NOTE concerning PDF content:
All of the articles and papers within the Library have been converted to Adobe Acrobat PDF format. Most of these documents have been scanned from the original hard copy, and converted to full-text searchable PDF Image-Plus-Text format. This file format permits you to view and print an accurate (bitmap) image of the original hardcopy. Great care was taken during the conversion of these documents to render the text, equations, photographs, tables, illustrations, and other images in such a way as to preserve the highest degree of fidelity to the appearance of the document as it was originally published. Although the PDF images in this Library have been verified to the greatest extent possible, it is possible due to many variables in the conversion process that the appearance of some pages may have been altered to some minor extent. Should you encounter documents that differ materially in appearance from the originally published hardcopy versions, please report such instances to AESElectronicLibrary@miracd.com.

If the Library installer fails to detect any of these applications on your system, it will offer to automatically install these elements.
Users of Macintosh and UNIX platforms must manually check to confirm that these applications are installed on their system before running the Library. If any of these elements is not yet installed, you must manually install them from disc #1, or download them from the Websites referenced above. Detailed instructions for installing these applications from disc #1 are included below:
Manual Installation of Acrobat® Reader from Disc #1:
Acrobat4 contains a directory for most platforms which includes the Acrobat® Reader software. Brief instructions for installing this software onto your hard disk follow. Please see the README file accompanying the Acrobat® Reader for more information.
Copy the file rs405eng.bin from the Acrobat4:MAC directory onto your hard drive. Unstuff the file using Stuffit Expander or any other common decompression utility. (The Stuffit Expander freeware can be downloaded from www.aladdinsys.com/expander/). Once the Reader+Search installer has been extracted, double click on it and follow the on-screen instructions.
For Windows 95, 98, NT or 2000 systems: Double click on the file rs405eng.exe in the directory Acrobat4 and follow the onscreen instructions.
To install the reader+search for your platform, locate the tar file in directory Acrobat4/Unix that pertains to your operating system (i.e. Linux 6.x, HP/UX 11.x, Solaris 2.x). To unarchive the installer, type the following command from a directory to which you have write permission: tar xf FileName - where "FileName" is the platform specific tar file containing the reader installation. This will create a "[platform].install" folder pertaining to your system in the current working directory. Next, change directory to the .install folder, and type:./INSTALL to install the reader. Further information on installation can be found in the unarchived installer directory in the file named INSTGUID.TXT
Manual Installation of Apple QuickTime from Disc #1:
To install QuickTime for Windows, simply double click on the file QTINST.EXE. The installer will step you through the installation process. Macintosh users must unstuff the file quiktime.hqx in the directory QT4:MAC. The un-stuffed file will create another archive called QuickTime Installer.smi.sit and an instllation file called QuickTime Installer.smi. Double click on QuickTIme Installer.smi and it will create a folder on your desktop called QuickTime Installer. Double click on the file QuickTime Installer in the folder Desktop:QuickTime Installer to begin the installation process Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the QuickTime installation.
Depending upon your operating system, the following browsers are highly recommended:
Platform: Recommended Browser Software:
Windows 95, 98, NT, 2000, or ME Netscape 4.x+
Mac OS 8.5 or greater Internet Explorer 5.0+
UNIX Netscape
Installers for these browser applications are included in the "browsers" directory on the root level of the CD-ROM.
NOTE: Should you choose to run the AES Electronic Library under Windows platforms using Internet Explorer, you may notice, upon navigating <Back> in your browser after loading the first PDF file following a disc swap, the PDF file appears as plain-text. Navigating <Forward> in your browser will display the correctly formatted PDF file, while navigating <Back> once again will return you to the Search Results screen. This is a known problem with IE5.x under Windows. This problem is not evident using Netscape 4.7x under Windows platforms.
Installation/Operation Options for the Electronic Library:
This Electronic Library can be installed and operated in one of three alternative ways:
1. Partial Hard Drive ("Typical") Installation - (RECOMMENDED FOR MOST USERS) - In this mode, all of the executable files, full-text search indices, and article metadata (Title, Author Names, Original Publication Name, Publication Date, Page Numbers, and Abstract Text) are installed to the local hard drive. This installation mode provides high navigational speed, and the convenient ability to initiate a search query across the entire Library and retrieve comprehensive search results without regard to which disc might currently reside in the CD-ROM drive. Under this installation mode, discs need only be swapped when retrieving a PDF file that resides on a disc other than the one currently sitting in the disc drive. PLEASE NOTE THAT THIS INSTALLATION MODE WILL REQUIRE APPROXIMATELY 180 MB OF AVAILABLE HARD DRIVE SPACE.
Platform-specific instructions for installing and launching the Library in this mode are included below:
2. Full Hard Drive ("Custom") Installation - This installation mode affords the fastest access to all articles in the Library, and eliminates the need for users to swap CD's to retrieve PDF files. THIS INSTALLATION MODE WILL REQUIRE BETWEEN 850 MB AND 8.3 GB, DEPENDING UPON WHICH COLLECTIONS YOU MAY WISH TO INSTALL. Please refer to the table below for the required disc space necessary for installation:
All three collections (with index and executable files) Approx. 8.3 GB
Preprints and Journals Only (with index and executable files) Approx. 7.5 GB
Preprints and Proceedings Only (with index and executable files) Approx. 5.8 GB
Journals And Proceedings Only (with index and executable files) Approx. 3.3 GB
Preprints Only (with index and executable files) Approx. 5.1 GB
Journals Only (with index and executable files) Approx. 2.7 GB
Proceedings Only (with index and executable files) Approx. 850 MB
NOTE: The Uninstall program will remove only program and collection (index) files. Any PDF's installed to the system hard drive must be deleted manually from the directory to which they were originally installed.
Platform-specific instructions for installing and launching the Library in this mode are included below:
3. Compact Installation - This mode of operating the Electronic Library installs to the hard drive only those executable files necessary to run the program. THIS WILL REQUIRE APPROXIMATELY 40 MB OF AVAILABLE HARD DISC SPACE.
In order to operate the Electronic Library in this mode, disc #1 must reside in the CD-ROM drive before a user may browse the Librarycontents or initiate a search query. In addition, search and retrieval in this mode may be somewhat slower than with either of the installation modes described above.
Platform-specific instructions for installing and launching the Library in this mode are included below:
Installation and Launch Instructions for Windows:
Installation and Launch Instructions for Windows:
Windows users should double click on Install.exe located in the top-level directory of disc #1. The installer software will step you through the installation process. It will check to see whether Adobe Acrobat Reader and QuickTime are installed. If not, you will be offered the opportunity to have them installed for you. You will also be asked to choose which type of installation you would like to perform (i.e. Typical, Custom, or Compact) and whether you would like the audio files copied to your hard drive. The installer will then install the selected components, update the registry, and optionally start the AES Electronic Library.
To launch the application after installation, select Start/Program Files/AES Group/AES Electronic Library
PLEASE NOTE: If prompted by Internet Explorer to 'Work Offline' or 'Try Again' during startup, please select 'TRY AGAIN'.
Installation and Launch Instructions for Macintosh:
PLEASE NOTE: Macintosh users must manually check to confirm that conforming Web browser software and Acrobat or Acrobat Reader are installed on their system before running the Library. If any of these elements is not yet installed, you must manually install them from disc #1, or download them from the Websites referenced below. Detailed instructions for installing these applications from disc #1 are included later in this README file.
Macintosh users should double click on the "Install AES Lib" icon located in the top-level directory of disc #1. The installer software will step you through the installation process, offering the Typical or Compact installation option. (For the Full Hard Drive installation option, please see the instructions below.) The installer will then install the selected components, and will offer the option of installing an alias (shortcut) icon on your desktop.
To launch the application after installation, you may double click the alias (shortcut) icon to your desktop (if you choose to install it), or double-click on the "Search" icon in the folder called AES E-Library created during installation.
To perform a Full Hard Drive installation on a Macintosh, first install the application as outlined above, selecting the "Typical" installation option. After the application has been successfully installed in "Typical" mode, copy the library content (.PDF files) by clicking-and-dragging the folder at the top-level of the desired CD to the "AES E-Library" folder created by the installer. While it is not necessary to copy the entire CD contents to your hard drive, you must maintain the directory structure of the CD below the AES E-Library folder.
Installation and Launch Instructions for UNIX:
PLEASE NOTE: UNIX users must manually check to confirm that conforming Web browser software and Acrobat or Acrobat Reader are installed on their system before running the Library. If any of these elements is not yet installed, you must manually install them from disc #1, or download them from the Websites referenced below. Detailed instructions for installing these applications from disc #1 are included later in this README file.
Unix installation is accomplished by executing the shell script "install.sh". After mounting disc #1, the user should open a terminal window and set their working directory to the root directory of the disc #1. To begin the installation process, type "./install.sh" at the Unix prompt. The installation script will ask you for a destination directory, the default is "$HOME/AESlib". To accept the default, simply press return, or enter another directory below the prompt. The user will then be asked whether they wish to install the collections and/or audio files. After receiving final verification, the installer will copy the specified files to the hard drive. If you wish to copy the Library content (.PDF files) from CD to your hard drive, please copy all directories from the root of the CD-ROM to the installation directory you specified (i.e. $HOME/AESlib).
To launch the application after installation, execute "AES E-Library" in the top-level of the directory created during installation.
HP-UX users should mount the CD using options: -F cdfs -o cdcase
Solaris users should mount the CD using options: -F hsfs -oro
Navigating the Electronic Library:
The navigational features of this Electronic Library are displayed in HTML format within your browser. The PDF formatted papers and articles are displayed within Adobe Acrobat® Reader.
The content of the Library can be accessed by Browse features and by Search features, selectable from the left-hand frame of your browser window.
Browse features permit you to view and select from a list of displayed options. These features include:
Retrieve by Title - Displays an alphabetical listing of article or paper titles
Retrieve by Authors - Displays an alphabetical listing of author names
NOTE: Author names are presented in this Library exactly as originally submitted in connection with each associated paper or article. It is possible that a single author's name may appear in slightly differing variations (e.g. "Stafford, Michael" and "Stafford, Michael K." and "Stafford, M.K."), if that author originally submitted such multiple variations in connection with his or her various contributions. It is thus recommended to explore all possible name variations when browsing by Author Name.
Retrieve by Journal - Permits user to generate a list of articles by Journal volume #, issue # or year published
Retrieve by Conference or Convention - Permits user to generate a list of preprints or proceedings papers by event date, event location, or event type (i.e. National Convention, Regional Convention, International Conference, or UK Conference).
The AES Electronic Library includes a powerful Verity search engine that permits you to locate documents by entering specific words or phrases that may appear within the full text of those documents. This search engine also permits you to find terms within specific document fields (such as the title, author names, abstract text, or date of original publication). The Verity search engine utilizes standard Boolean operators (such as AND, OR, and NOT), as well as more advanced features (such as wildcard searching, word stemming, proximity searching, etc.) For additional Search instructions, please see the Search Basics and Advanced Search Help sections below.
NOTE concerning Searching of PDF Image-Over-Text files:
Most of the articles and papers in this Electronic Library have been scanned from the original hard copy, and converted to full-text searchable PDF Image-Plus-Text format. The full-text indexed by the search engine in connection with these PDF Image-Plus-Text files was generated by Optical Character Recognition (OCR). While several measures were taken to maximize the accuracy of this OCR process, the results are, by definition, not 100% accurate. If your specified search term is used only once or twice within the full text of a document, there is a small chance that OCR inaccuracies will prevent that document from being returned for your query. For this reason, and because terminology may have been different when some of the earlier content in this Library was first published, it may be helpful to include alternative terminology in your queries (using the Boolean "OR" operator).
Basic search help can be found at: Search Engine Basics
Advanced search help can be found at: Advanced Search Topics
Searching within an Individual PDF Document:
Under Windows platforms, the Verity search engine will automatically highlight search terms found within the identified PDF files. Under Macintosh and UNIX platform, the Acrobat® "Find" function can be used to locate specific search terms within individual PDF documents. To use the Acrobat® "Find" function, select the "Binoculars" icon from the Acrobat® toolbar, or select Control F on your keyboard.
Instructions for Swapping CD-ROMs:
The AES Electronic Library permits "hot-swapping" of CD-ROMs within the collection, without requiring you to shut down the Library application to swap discs. If a selected PDF file resides on a disc other than the disc currently sitting in the drive, the Library software will prompt you to insert the appropriate disc. The precise procedure for disc-swapping will vary slightly, depending upon your operating system. The platform-specific instructions provided below should be employed after clicking on the HERE NOW prompt in your browser. This will release the CD-ROM from program control and allow you to eject the current CD.
Windows 95/98/NT/2000/ME Platforms:
Windows users may eject the CD-ROM by pressing the Eject button on the CD-ROM drive of your Windows PC or by using right-click-Eject from Windows Explorer. Insert the CD-ROM with the appropriate number and wait until the CD-ROM "spins-up" or stabilizes (this may take up to 30 seconds, depending upon the speed of your CD-ROM drive). Then press OK in the Javascript Window that prompted you to change the CD-ROM. The document you requested will be displayed in your browser. If by chance you inserted the wrong CD-ROM and pressed OK, you will be prompted again to insert the correct disc.
Macintosh Platforms:
In order to swap CD-ROMs on a Macintosh, do the following:
1. Pull down the "Application" menu in the upper-right hand corner of the Mac OS menu bar and select the Finder entry from the list of currently running applications in order to switch the Finder to the foreground.
2. If there are application windows blocking the view of your Finder desktop, pull down the Application menu again and select the "Hide Others" option to temporarily hide the other windows.
3. Select the CD-ROM icon on the Finder desktop and drag it to the Trash Can to eject it.
4. Insert the specified CD-ROM and wait for it to appear on your Finder desktop.
5. To return to browsing the Electronic Library, pull down the Application menu and select the entry for your web browser application (e.g. "Netscape Communicator", "Internet Explorer", etc.) in order to bring it back to the foreground and continue from where you left off.
If at any time, you should inadvertently hit the OK button before switching CD-ROMs and receive an error about being unable to access a file, simply click on the Reload button in the web browser to reset the page and try again
UNIX Platforms:
On UNIX platforms, the user must explicitly issue the "eject" or "unmount" command to eject the CD-ROM from the drive. Then insert the CD-ROM with the appropriate number. Wait until the CD-ROM "spins up" or stabilizes (this may take up to 30 seconds, depending upon the speed of your CD-ROM drive). Then press OK in the Javascript Window that prompted you to change the CD-ROM. If by chance you inserted the wrong CD-ROM and pressed OK, you will be prompted, once again, to insert the proper disc.
