About

Michele Scarpiniti is an Associate Professor at the Department of Information Engineering, Electronics and Telecommunication (DIET) of the University of Rome "La Sapienza" since 2020. From March 2008 to September 2020 he was an Assistant Professor at the same Department. He got the "Laurea" degree com laude in Electrical Engineering and the Ph.D. in Information and Communication Engineering from the Engineering Faculty of the University of Rome "La Sapienza" in 2005 and 2009 respectively. He has obtained the National Scientific Qualification (ASN) for the Prima Fascia in the research field ING-IND/31 in the 2018/2020 call.
Michele Scarpiniti's current research interests are in the field of nonlinear signal processing, circuit and algorithms for audio signal processing, array signal processing and blind source separation. In particular, concerning the latter topic, the research activity concerned with the study of theory and algorithms for blind source separation: the research activity focused both on the theoretic separability of linear and nonlinear mixtures, instantaneous and convolutive mixtures, real and complex mixtures, and the implementation of unsupervised algorithms for the separation of such mixtures. In addition, he works on nonlinear adaptive filtering, with a particular emphasis in nonlinear system identification. Other research interests concerned with the monophonic/stereophonic echo cancellation in adverse environment and in presence of strong nonlinear distortion and with the acoustic source localization. He is also interested in machine learning and neural networks for signal processing. The research activity was taken in the sphere of several strategic National projects. From 2008/2009 to 2017/2018, Prof. Scarpiniti taught "Electrical Engineering" in the course of Safety Engineering, from 2009/2010 he teaches "Laboratory for Multimedia Elaboration" in the course of Communication Engineering and from 2019/2020 he teaches "Machine Learning for Safety Systems" in the course of Safety and Civile Protection Engineering, and in 2012/13 he has also taught "Discrete Time Circuits Theory". In addition, his current didactic activity also concerned with several seminars for the following courses: "Electrical Engineering", "Circuits and Algorithms for Signal Processing", "Audio Signal Processing" and "Neural Networks". Moreover, Michele Scarpiniti is a member of "Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers" (IEEE), of "Audio Engineering Society" (AES), for which he is a member of the Board of the Italian Section, of "Società Italiana Reti Neuroniche" (SIREN), and of "International Neural Network Society" (INNS).
Prof. Scarpiniti is Subject Editor of Elsevier Signal Processing journal and he is in the Editorial board, as an Associate Editor, of the Elsevier Digital Signal Processing, Elsevier Array, and IET Electronics Letters journals. He was also an Academic Editor, of the Wiley/Hindawi journal Complexity. From 2006 he has served regularly as a reviewer for IEEE Transactions on Neural Networks, Neurocomputing, Signal Processing, IEEE Transactions on Signal Processing, IEEE Transactions on Audio, Speech and Language Processing and occasionally for many other journals (such as IEEE Signal Processing Letters, IEEE Communications Letters, Neural Networks, etc.) and several international conferences. Since 2012, he is also a member of the Technical Program Committee of International Conference on Pattern Recognition (ICPR) and International Conference on Pattern Recognition Applications and Methods (ICPRAM). From 2012 Michele Scarpiniti was a co-organizer of several Special Session at international conferences. Moreover, Dr. Scarpiniti was a member of the Local Conference Committee of the following International conferences: 48-th International Carnahan Conference on Security Technology (ICCST 2014); International Conference on Nonlinear Speech Processing (NOLISP 2015); and, 33rd IEEE International Workshop on Machine Learning for Signal Processing (MLSP 2023). Prof. Scarpiniti was also the Program Chair of the 33rd IEEE International Workshop on Machine Learning for Signal Processing (MLSP 2023). Dr. Scarpiniti has published more than 120 papers in both international journals and conference proceedings.
