Vesa Välimäki's research focuses on digital signal processing algorithms and applications in audio and acoustics. He is a Full Professor of audio signal processing and the Vice Dean for Research in the Aalto University School of Electrical Engineering. His research group belongs to the Aalto Acoustics Lab, a multidisciplinary center of high competence with excellent facilities for sound-related research. His research group is part of the Nordic University Hub project NordicSMC (Sound and Music Computing), which receives funding from NordForsk.
Prof. Välimäki is a Fellow of the IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers) and a Fellow of the AES. He has been an Associate Editor of several journals, such as the IEEE Signal Processing Letters and the IEEE/ACM Transactions on Audio, Speech and Language Processing. He has been a Senior Area Editor of the IEEE/ACM Transactions on Audio, Speech and Language Processing since 2015. He has arranged several special issues for international scientific journals, such as for the Applied Sciences (in 2016, 2018, and 2020) and for the IEEE Signal Processing Magazine (in 2015 and 2019). He was the Chair of the 11th International Conference on Digital Audio Effects DAFx-08, Espoo, Finland, in September 2008. He was also the General Chair of the 14th Sound and Music Computing Conference SMC-17, Espoo, Finland, in July 2017. In September 2020, he was nominated as the Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of the Audio Engineering Society.
In 2012, Vesa Valimaki was presented with the AES Fellowship Award for his contribution to the development of advanced digital signal processing for audio applications.
