Harman International - Principal Engineer -Acoustical Design Analyst

Essential Responsibilities:

The Harman Embedded Audio Group (HEA)(Formally MWM Acoustics, LLC) is seeking an Acoustical Design Analyst to help lead the design and development of new audio products and technologies, and provide specialized application engineering customer support as needed. Products include loudspeakers, receivers, MEMS and electret microphones, and systems using these transducers such as handsets and array microphones. The Design Analyst will leverage analytical modeling and simulation to (i) determine feasibility, (ii) optimize parameters, and (iii) predict performance. The Design Analyst will help plan experiments in the forefront as guided by their simulation results, and play a major role in data analysis and troubleshooting. The Design Analyst will be active in the creation of intellectual property.

This position reports to the Engineering Manager and is located at the group head quarters in Northridge, California.

Specific responsibilities of the position are as follows:

•Help lead the design and development of new technology and products for HEA relying heavily on analytical modeling efforts.
•Determine the feasibility of new technology, ideas, and products proposed or ideated.
•Optimize prototype and/or design parameters to maximize performance -- one objective being the reduction of the development cycle time.
•Predict the performance of new or modified product prototypes -- prior to their fabrication and testing.
•Help plan experiments to prove in, or troubleshoot, new or existing products.
•Play a major role in the data analysis of measured results.
•Play a significant role in the ideation of new technology, and/or troubleshooting of existing products.
•Be active in the creation of intellectual property.
•Provide specialized applications engineering support, as needed, in conjunction with the Sales Team and/or factories.

Basic Qualifications:

•M.S. Degree in Acoustics or Mechanics. Proficiency with computer modeling tools such as Spice, Matlab, and/or FEA applications.
•10 years relevant work experience in mathematical analysis of audio and/or voice communication products.
•Expertise in the theoretical aspects of physical and engineering acoustics, plus an analytical understanding of audio transducers and acoustical systems such as microphones, loudspeakers, receivers, ear-sets, headsets, and telephone handsets, and the like.

Required Characteristics:

•Understanding of MEMS device design and familiarity with FEA software used in that application
•Ability to successfully manage multiple projects concurrently
•Must work well in a global, cross functional development team.
•Must be able to independently drive projects.

Desired Characteristics:

•The preferred candidate will hold a Ph.D. in Acoustics or Mechanics.
•The preferred candidate will have more than 15 years experience developing audio and/or consumer products per the description above.
•The preferred candidate will be an excellent communicator with the ability to conceive and present new ideas effectively.

Eligibility Requirements:

•Willingness to travel up to 10% of the time
•Willingness to work in an office in Northridge, California.
•Willingness to submit to a background screen and a drug test
