Harman International - Senior Manager - Acoustic Research

Two+ direct reports including Harman Audio Test System (HATS) Lead Programmer and Loudspeaker Engineer.
Three (+) in-direct reports: programmers from other departments working on the HATS project.
Manages outside consultants or collaborations such as University or Research Institures for loudspeaker designs and Hardware/Software designs.
Manages larger research projects with other team members assigned into project
Provide leadership, governance and management control of key R&D projects associated with loudspeakers and loudspeaker-room systems. Manage and ensure the project deliverables are on-time with best in class quality.
Leads the development of Harman Audio Test System.
Leads research in innovative material usage (i.e.: Neodymium replacement, cone materials, etc.)
Leads and collaborates with researchers and engineers in Lifestyle to develop better design and test methodologies for home and car audio system design.
Leads and collaborates with researchers and engineers in Pro to develop better loudspeaker systems and methodologies for in-situ optimization of professional systems.
Lead efforts for cross-HARMAN synergy in the areas of audio system design (including loudspeakers, amplifiers and DSP)
Lead cross-HARMAN technology initiatives for new and novel loudspeaker characterization and car/room/venue tuning methodologies.
Develop patent strategies for loudspeakers and assists Intellectual Property Department by reviewing Invention Disclosures associated with loudspeakers. Makes recommendations whether patents should be pursued or not.
Collaborate with Universities and outside organizations in the development of new loudspeaker technologies.
Provide leadership and guidance to coach, mentor, motivate and lead loudspeaker engineers throughout Harman to their optimum performance levels and career development.
Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering (or Mechanical Engineering, Acoustics or similar)
Minimum 10 years experience in Product Development including a minimum of 5 years of Engineering Management and Project Management
Minimum 10 years experience in Research
In-depth understanding of loudspeakers and loudspeakers systems of all sizes (i.e. from small multimedia transducers to large-format pro systems)
In-depth understanding of loudspeaker and loudspeaker-room measurements and measurement methodologies and how they are psycho-acoustically relevant
Excellent English written and oral communication skills
Experience in the following technological areas:
Loudspeaker Systems development
Audio Systems development
Distributed team product development
Masters Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Acoustical Engineering, or Electrical Engineering or equivalent
Training in Project Management and/or Supervisory Management
Excellent presentation skills
Excellent critical-listening skills
Experience with Patents and Intellectual Property Management
Experience in two or more of the following technological areas:
Digital Signal Processing
Software Engineering and Software Project Management
Willingness to travel 10% of the time
Willingness to work in an office in Northridge, California
Willingness to submit to a background screen and a drug test
