Surround Sound Encoding for Consumer Applications

Michael Truman
Dolby Laboratories Inc., San Francisco, CA, USA

One of the problems with consumer playback of surround sound content is the equipment has limited types of multichannel inputs. Generally, a Toslink or an S/PDIF input is used to carry a compressed multi-channel audio stream. This paper describes how a consumer audio encoder that uses this digital channel can be created to balance performance and cost through proper algorithm design.
