Dr Emmett joined the Engineering Department of Thames Television in London after gaining a Ph.D. at Durham University, and starting the UK audio equipment manufacturers EMO Systems Ltd. He continued as R&D Manager at Pearson Television, and then built up Broadcast Project Research Ltd as an Independent Studio based Research group at Teddington Studios. He is currently Technical Director of the commercial Production company Nostairway creative, based at Twickenham Studios.
Originally representing the UK as principle digital audio expert to the IEC, he is perhaps best known for his work on digital audio and video standards. He chaired the EBU digital audio advisory group P/AGA, which was responsible for the Broadcast Wave Format, and is currently involved in LED lighting and standards work for the EBU. He held a chair at the International Academy of Broadcasting in Montreux, and has examined for Surrey and Glyndwr universities in the UK, as well as External Course Development at the University of Bradford and Southampton Solent. He holds life membership of the Audio Engineering society, Royal Television Society and the SMPTE.
