John Dawson studied Natural Sciences at Trinity College, Cambridge from where he founded the audio business Amplification and Recording in 1972. It's first hi-fi product, the A&R A60 stereo integrated amplifier, started production in 1976 and over 32,000 were eventually built and sold worldwide. The business became A & R Cambridge Ltd, a UK registered company, in 1977 with John as co-owner and Managing Director. The brand name was changed to ARCAM in the mid 1980s and under John's leadership the company went on to develop and manufacture a wide range of highly acclaimed amplifiers, CD players, DVD players and AV receivers. In late 2004 the company went through a management buyout and John repurposed his role within ARCAM back to his intial love, product design. Since then he has been responsible for the circuitry and hardware implementation of most of Arcam's amplification and digital to analogue products.
ARCAM was acquired by Harman International in 2017 and John then founded Jade Electronics Ltd, in order to further his work in audio product design for a number of well known international brands.
He has been a member of AES since 1977 and has previously chaired the UK chapter for a number of years. He maintains an keen interest in reproducing audio to the highest possible standards.
