David Varona

PhD in Journalism by the Universidad Complutense de Madrid.
His PhD Thesis was: “The Influence of Social Media Sites in Practices, Habits and Techniques of Spanish journalists”, submitted in March 2014.

After his graduation in 1999, he earned a Master in International Relations and Communication by the Universidad Complutense (2002-2004) and achieved the title of Expert in Scientific and Environmental Journalism (2007) in the Universidad Rey Juan Carlos de Madrid.

His research focused on social media, new media, transmedia and new narratives, including new TV formats as HbbTV or SmarTV.

In the academic area Varona has been an associated teacher of Cyberjournalism and New Media in the Universidad Francisco de Vitoria de Madrid (2012-2015), and teacher of Social Media in the Instituto de Radio Televisión Española (RTVE) in Madrid.

During the academic year 2015-2016 he will lecture on Communication at Universidad de Loyola Andalucía, teaching Design and Production of Digital Contents and Audiovisual and Multimedia Technologies as main topic.

In the field of enterprise Varona has been Project Manager at RTVE.es (2008-2015), the web site of Radio Televisión Española, Spain’s biggest public broadcaster. He worked on the development of new sites, mobile apps or connected TV applications, with an emphasis on social layer.

Varona has also worked as editor-in-chief for Autopista Online (1999-2007), the auto and motorsports site of Terra.es, very popular between Spanish and Portuguese web surfers.

His entire professional career has been linked to new technologies and Internet media.
