Jon Gibbs

Jon Gibbs was born in Derbyshire, England, in 1963. He received a BSc in Electronic Engineering from the University of York, UK, in 1985 and a PhD in Digital Signal Processing for Communications from University of Southampton, UK, in 1991.

After working for GEC Marconi, based in Portsmouth, for 8 years as a DSP Design Engineer he moved to Motorola's European Research Laboratory in Basingstoke in 1993 where he worked until 2013 as a Research Engineer. While at Motorola, Jon specialized in research and standardization for speech coding and processing; participating in several ITU-T, ETSI and 3GPP developments as well as developing coding technologies along the way. Amongst the key international standardization efforts he was involved in, Jon led the work as Rapporteur in ITU-T on the development of Recommendation G.718.

In 2013, Jon began working with Huawei Technologies Co Ltd and has continued to work in the area of speech and audio coding standards in 3GPP and GSMA with an emphasis on the completion, documentation and publicizing of the 3GPP EVS codec standard. Recently he has also started to attend MPEG.

Jon is a Senior Member of IEEE, the author of a number of scientific papers and has over 60 granted patents.
