Tom Scott: Services that are not (Yet) Available on the Internet. The presenters from the morning Symposium are joined by four other noted industry professionals to discuss applications of digital audio over long distance telephone connections for recording, approval, direction, screenings, deliveries, etc. The issues of provision, quality, economics, troubleshooting, special applications, etc. will be discussed from the points of view of the participants' experiences and their companies' requirements, products and services. Audience members will expected to become participants and interact with questions and observations. By the end of this session there should be a clear understanding of where the Internet stops and switched digital telephony picks up.

  1. How are long distance collaborations being accomplished over digital lines in the areas of commercial preparation, film/TV, music recording?
  2. What memorable "sessions" can you tell us about (good, bad, or otherwise)?
  3. What type of digital lines are employed?
  4. What audio and video compression algorithms are in use in professional applications today?
  5. How much compression can be tolerated for various applications?
  6. What other quality issues are important for "on-line" collaboration?
  7. Are there important operational requirements for "on-line" collaboration?
  8. How do facilities deal with the inherent delays of encode/decode and transport?
  9. If the Internet could handle this type of connections, what would this mean for the companies of the participants?
  10. What are the attributes that the Internet will need to improve before this sort of real-time services can be accommodated?

Biographies: Kim Gould, Marty Newman

Kim Gould

KIM GOULD has worked in the field of digital video communications for the past six years. Currently, Mr. Gould is Director of Program Management at Digital Generation Systems (San Francisco), leading the company's effort to deploy video delivery systems and services into the broadcast and professional video industry. Previously, Mr. Gould was Director of New Product Development for Entertainment Digital Network (San Francisco), where he headed the effort to develop and deploy the international FFD video transmission network, which was used heavily in the production of FX-intensive television shows. In 1991, Mr. Gould co-founded Mad River Technologies (Santa Monica, Ca.) and in 1995 became the company President. He co-invented VideoFax which resulted in a patented approach to digital video compression and transmission. He directed product development and deployment of the nationwide VideoFax Network for use by advertising agencies, editorial and post houses. Prior to 1991, Mr. Gould worked for a number of years at Hughes Aircraft (Los Angeles), where he managed R&D, engineering and manufacturing for satellite communication systems for the U.S. Government.

Marty Newman

MARTY NEWMAN is Chief Engineer and Vice President of Howard Schwartz Recording in New York. Howard Schwartz Recording is one the largest Audio Post Production facilities in the country,specializing in all video & computer audio formats. Marty has been with HSR for 15 years. His responsibilities include all system design and installations. He is also responsible for the Audio Post Production design for the 1994 Winter Olympics. Marty is a graduate of the Tonemeister program from SUNY Fredonia. He is also a graduate from the Eastman School of Music (Sound Recording Program).
