Abstract:
Visit Dolby's (dolby.com) world headquarters for a behind-the-scenes demonstration and discussion of Atmos in Dolby's world-class screening room. Considered to be the most significant new development in audio since surround sound, Dolby Atmos delivers a more natural and realistic soundfield. It transports the audience into the story with a "lifelike sensory experience." Developed with input from highly respected feature film professionals, this new concept in sound represents a dynamic reinvention of traditional surround sound methodology.

TT2 - Tamalpais Research Institute (TRI)


Abstract:
Created by Grateful Dead founding member Bob Weir, TRI (www.tristudios.com) is a $5+ million, state-of-the-art performance studio for broadcasting live video and audio streams to the internet. The 11,500-square-foot complex has two studios, including a 2,000-square-foot main studio with a the Meyers Sound Constellation System. Control room A seamlessly integrates a 48 channel 7.1 surround API analog console with racks of outboard gear spanning from decades of Grateful Dead tours to the latest technology. The entire facility is interconnected for audio and HD video recording. The visionary broadcast and recording capabilities offer a revolutionary new concept, allowing fans to enjoy intimate live performances from wherever they have internet access.

Abstract:
The latest addition to San Rafael’s night life scene, this new, 150 seat, 8600-square-foot performing venue combines innovative food and drinks with outstanding acoustics and a Meyer's speaker system, for a remarkable live music experience. Behind the scenes is their state-of-the art studio production for recording and streaming live shows to the internet. Architect/acoustician John Storyk, whose Walters-Storyk Design Group designed the club, will be leading part of the tour. (http://fenixlive.com)

TT4 - Ex’Pression College For Digital Arts


Abstract:
Visit one of the Bay Area's largest and most comprehensive cutting-edge educational campuses. Ex’Pression (expression.edu) has an interactive audio program focused on preparing students for careers in video games, mobile phone technology, hand-held multimedia devices, and many more contemporary creative options. This tour will take you through the ultra modern school, which features multiple studios, control rooms, editing suites, gaming stations, a theater, MDG Labs, and a stop motion room. Among the guides for this tour will be legendary multi-Grammy-winning producer/engineer Jack Douglas, who is now a guest lecturer on Sound Arts for Ex’Pression.

TT5 - 25th Street Recording


Abstract:
Distinguished by a 1,400 square-foot tracking room and 17-foot-high ceilings, you may recognize 25th Street from the October 2011 cover of Mix Magazine. This new complex represents a rare example of a large-scale studio launch in our current “project studio” era. Outfitted with a massive collection of analog outboard gear and a 64-channel API Vision console, 25th Street (25thstreetrecording.com ) also boasts a number of cool (and green) aesthetic accoutrements, including floors fashioned from wood reclaimed from stadium benches. Award-winning architect/acoustician Fran Manzella of FM Design Ltd., who designed 25th Street, will participate on this tour.

TT6 - Polarity Post Production and Outpost Studios


Abstract:
Two powerhouses of postproduction under one roof; the proximity of Polarity (polaritypost.com) and Outpost (outpostfilm.com) makes this the premiere destination for post projects of any size.

Polarity Post
A full service audio post house, with 5 studio's ranging from stereo to 5.1 and a Dolby Certified 5.1/7.1 mixing stage, Polarity represents the penultimate environment for creative sound design and mixing. Lead engineers Patrick Fitzgerald and Eduardo Mendoza have worked on projects for HBO, ABC, MTV, The Food Network, History Channel, Nat Geo, and the Disney Channel along with many national ad campaigns for SF's, and other national, ad agencies. Recent projects done at Polarity were "True Blood" (HBO) and the "Great Food Truck Race" (Food Network).

Outpost Studios
San Francisco veterans of sound design, music, Dolby mixing, voice-over/ADR, and Foley for feature films, TV, and gaming, Outpost has built a new Dolby 5.1/7.1 calibrated control room and mix stage. Supervising Sound Engineer Dave Nelson, one of the most sought-after sound designer/engineers in the industry, will lead the tour. Recent Outpost projects include the new Robert Redford feature “The Company You Keep,” and Kiefer Southerland’s “Touch” for Fox.

TT7 - Fantasy Recording Studios


Abstract:
Fantasy Recording Studio is celebrating its 40th year as one of the world’s premiere studios. With credits ranging from Creedence Clearwater to U2 and Estelle, Fantasy continues to attract crème de la crème artists and producers. The three-studio complex boasts a total Studio D upgrade, completed early this year.

TT8 - Electronic Arts


Abstract:
The world’s largest video game publisher is opening their doors to AES attendees with this rare tour of the 22-acre campus-like environment featuring a number of high tech development and production studios. Wear your walking shoes because this tour will visit each of EA’s four buildings and includes a presentation in their state-of-the-art auditorium, a "Visceral Studio" demonstration illustrating the audio focus of game development and a web audio API sound engine demo. Utopia keyboardist Roger Powell will participate, in his current role as EA's senior producer on emerging music technologies.
