TT3 - Edison National Historic Site


Abstract:
What events inspired the invention of the phonograph? Visit the birthplace that launched our recording industry! The Thomas Edison National Historical Park reveals the genius's quintessential "invention factory" laboratories—that gave us our jobs!

TT1 - NYU Steinhardt


Abstract:
NYU’s Steinhardt School of Culture, Education and Human
Development Department of Music and Performing Arts Professions: At 7500+ sq. ft. this recording studio/teaching complex currently under construction near Washington Sq. Park in NY's Greenwich Village will be one of the largest and most technically advanced audio teaching facilities in the U.S. Created by the Walters Storyk Design Group, this 10.2 surround complex will feature oversized control and live rooms, a large iso/drum booth, natural light from multiple windows, and line of site through the entire studio. Construction will be nearing completion at the time of this tour. This will afford attendees a rare opportunity to see a number of architectural and acoustic design elements that will be hidden when the facility is “picture perfect.”  The tour will be guided by WSDG principal John Storyk and Masque Sound associate David Kotch.

TT4 - DuART


Abstract:
After being silent, movies gained a voice, a music bed, and foley or sound effects. Find out how that strip of sound, a line of undulating light, the magnetic strip, or a digital block is applied to the motion picture. With countless industry transforming inventions to their credit, learn from this, the oldest, most celebrated film and video processing company in the Western Hemisphere.

Lincoln Center's famed Alice Tully Hall has undergone a major renovation. Larry King, architectural acoustician responsible for this premiere concert hall's transformation will show us what he's done.

TT7 - SMT Recording Studio


Abstract:
SMT is a boutique recording studio in Chelsea. Since its founding in 2005, it has offered a new experience in the music industry. While other recording studios can seem sterile and impersonal, SMT provides a comfortable atmosphere to inspire creative minds. SMT's world-class mix room will be upgraded next month, when a vintage 64-channel SSL 4000 G+ console will replace the current DMX-R100 digital console. SMT's mixing location is complemented by partner tracking studio
Treefort Recording in the DUMBO area of Brooklyn, which features an extensive selection of vintage amplifiers, microphones, and tape machines.

TT8 - Hobo - Machine - Tangerine - SST and Syndicate


Abstract:
Tony Shanahan and Emory Dobyns are hardly on the lam with this 75-channel classic. Gene the Machine has the busiest studio per square foot. Roger Johanson brushes citrus-sweet sound with a broad palate of mastering electronics. Flying high, John's soundstage is in 72 channel focus. And the Syndicate will have your tunes playing on every college radio station in the nation. A sound co-operative in the Brill tradition.

TT9 - Sterling Sound


Abstract:
Sterling Sound is a New York City mastering legend. Founded in 1969, Sterling’s engineers have put the finishing touches to many of the most iconic and top selling records in history. During the tour of Sterling’s Chelsea studio complex you will be able to view their seven mastering suites, four production suites, and vinyl cutting room. TT10 - audioEngine


Abstract:
Since opening its flagship facility in 2001, the audioEngine complex has earned a reputation as a leader in NY’s audio postproduction market. The formula for this success is based on delivering a full range of creative services to the advertising, broadcast, and film industries. This showplace facility spans two floors and 12,000 square feet of studio space featuring eight mixing rooms and eight unique studio environments (six created by award-winning architect/acoustician John Storyk). These include the recently completed Studio E which specializes in theatrical mixing, and the Adirondacks-style inspired "Cabin In the Sky" suite.

TT11 - EUE Screen Gems Studios


Abstract:
In 2005, after almost three decades of five-day-a-week production on daytime programming classics Guiding Light, Search For Tomorrow, and Edge of Night, this vast, full-service 125,000 sq. ft. midtown-Manhattan production complex re-positioned itself to enter a new era of digital production for the global television, feature film, commercial advertising, and new media industries. This complete retooling of their six stages and support areas and support areas has created a fully integrated digital workplace— “The DigiPlex.”  Beyond providing high-end production, postproduction services, and “wired” production offices to CBS’s Rachael Ray, an anchor tenant since 2005, the studios host The Onion News Network, and a variety of traditional and new media clients including, Warner Brothers TV, PBS, Food Network, Embassy Row, WebMD, Paramount Pictures, Oxygen Network, BET, History Channel, Fox News, Universal Music Group, and commercial advertising agencies and production companies, among others.
