18TH ANNUAL GRAMMY RECORDING SOUNDTABLE
Moderator: Michael Molenda, Editor in Chief, Guitar Player Magazine; Editorial Director, Music Player Network Panelists: Ed Cherney Michael Fusaro Jim Gaines Steve Miller
Abstract: Anatomy of a Hit: Steve Miller Band’s Fly Like an Eagle
Originally released in 1976, the songs on Steve Miller Band’s Fly Like An Eagle album are still staples on today’s Classic Rock radio stations. The album itself, which spawned three hit singles—“Rock ‘N Me,” “Take the Money and Run,” and “Fly Like An Eagle,” went quadruple Platinum and spent nearly two years on the Billboard 200. This year, Capitol Records released a 30-year anniversary special edition of the album with stunning 5.1 mixes that, Miller has commented, represent the way he always believed his music could sound.
A singer/songwriter/guitarist—and pop rock hit-maker—Miller is known for his iconoclastic point of view and his impassioned dedication to artistic control. For this panel discussion he will reunite with original Fly Like An Eagle engineers Jim Gaines (Santana, Stevie Ray Vaughan, George Thorogood) and Michael Fusaro (Herbie Hancock, Sly & the Family Stone, Elvin Bishop) who will be joined by surround mix engineer Ed Cherney (the Rolling Stones, Bonnie Raitt, Wynonna Judd ) to examine the transformation of Fly Like an Eagle from an idea to an iconic recording.
