Tom Daily, Dolby Laboratories, San Francisco, CA, USA

Summary
In recent years the broadcast industry has started digital broadcasting using satellite. It brought new services such as high definition picture and 5.1 surround sound. In this workshop panelists will show HDTV programs with 5.1 surround sound as broadcasted in North America, Europe and Japan. The material will include sections from dramas, TV movies, music and nature documentaries. Based on the experiences gained the interaction between 5.1 surround sound and picture will be discussed. Sound editing is required to make surround sound more effective and less dependent from the viewing angle. Complementing the picture with 5.1 surround sound adds an extra creative dimension to the new broadcasting.
Furthermore the household penetration of 5.1 surround receivers will be reviewed. The differences between film and home theater, the kind of 5.1 surround sound programs viewers expect, and the steps required to stimulate further penetration of surround sound will be discussed.
