W12: Microphones: What is Vintage?

Chair:
Karl Winkler, Sennheiser Electronic Corporation, Old Lyme, CT, USA

Panelists:
Bruce Swedien, Stamford, CT, USA
David Smith
Leslie Ann Jones

Though the term "vintage microphones" often conjures up images of beautifully made old transducers showing the patina of decades of pampered (and sometimes not so pampered) use, few people agree to the exact definition of this term. This workshop brought together a broad range of experienced engineering talent to discuss this very issue. Favorite microphones were discussed, along with why they are considered important. Some of the most memorable and important recordings produced with these vintage beauties were played for attendees.
