W10: Perceptual Evaluation of High Resolution Audio

Chair:
Elliot Mazer, RCS, White Plains, NY, USA

Panelists:
Michael Bishop, Telarc International Corporation, Cleveland, OH, USA
Tony Faulkner, Green Studio Production, London, UK
Akira Fukada, NHK (Japan Broadcast Corporation), Nagareyama, Chiba, Japan
Tom Jung, DMP Records, Stamford, CT, USA
George Massenberg, GML, North Hollywood, CA, USA

High-resolution audio disks formatted by DVD-Audio and SACD are already on the market. At a former AES workshop in Amsterdam, the discussion focused on some artifacts, such as nonlinearity laid in various processes from pickup to human auditory system on the assumption that high-resolution audio signals are perceptually effective. At this workshop, panelists will discuss the effectiveness in music recordings and the psychological evaluations perceived by professional balance engineers and recording engineers who have had practically excellent experiences with high-resolution audio (HRA). Panelists will discuss how they feel, perceive, and analyze perceptually the HRA sounds. How and to what extent do they feel any effectiveness on HRA in music recording. With what words do they express the impression. How do researchers analyze the words to conduct subjective or objective experiments.
