AES 106th Convention, Munich, Germany 1999 May 8-11

TECHNICAL TOURS

A total of 14 Technical Tours were planned. They catered to a wide range of interests.

T1 Bayerischer Rundfunk (BR) Radio Broadcast
Saturday, May 8, 17:00 - 19:30 h
This tour included a visit to a fully digital and networked Studio, where the BR radio news program �B5 aktuell� is produced and transmitted. Additionally, the fully automatic Broadcasting control of DAB (Digital Audio Broadcasting) as well as 3 brand new Studios for self-operating of the �local news� in the main radio program can be visited. Moreover, the sound archives were shown, including the newly developed digital archive.

T2 Bavaria Filmstudio in M�nchen-Geiselgasteig
Sunday, May 9, 10:00 - 12:30 h
Tour around Germany�s biggest film and video production site, with special focus on the audio post production area.

T3 MSM Studio in M�nchen-Schwabing
Sunday, May 9, 10:00 - 12.00 h
In two Studios, the complete DVD Mastering and multi-channel coding were shown. Also, 48/96 kHz comparison and sound restoration can be demonstrated.

T4 New Fair and Convention-Center (ICM)
of Munich in M�nchen-Riem

Sunday, May 9, 14:00 - 18.00 h
Brand new international fair with 2 broadcast-studios and a Convention location for max. 6500 visitors with fully digitalized high-tech sound-system. All studios are linked with glass-fibre conductors to minimize interferences.

T5 Bayerischer Rundfunk (BR) TV Broadcast
Sunday, May 9, 14:00 - 16:30 h
Two big production studios and a postproduction studio with TV and sound control were shown, in which the technical equipment is of the same kind. Also the studio acoustics were demonstrated.

T6 �CINEMA� Film Theater
Monday, May 10, 10:00 - 12:30 h
This film-theatre is one of the most perfect cinemas in Germany. Comparison of digital sound formats for film as Dolby Stereo A/SR/SRD, DTS, SDSS (Sony Dynamic Stereo Sound) and Lucasfilm Sound THX is possible during this tour.

T7 The Liebfrauenkirche � the Main Church of Munich
Monday, May 10, 9:30 - 11:30 h
The PA-System and the problems with the room-acoustics (reverberation-time 13,6 s at 250 Hz) will be explained. A very famous organ of the Company Jann (95 registers) and a side Organ (36 registers) was be visited and played by the Dom-Organist Prof. Franz Lehrndorfer.

T8 Technical University (T.U.M.) of Munich
Monday, May 10, 14:00 - 16:00 h
In the Institute of �Man-Machine-Communication� the newest R & D projects were visited, as speech-recognition, noise evaluation, data reduction methods and voice selection. The Usability Lab and the anechoic chamber were shown.

T9 Antenne Bayern � Private Radio Station
in Ismaning, near Munich

Monday, May 10, 14:00 - 17:00 h
The brand new equipped radiostation of the private Broadcaster �Antenne Bayern� were visited.

T10 Institut f�r Rundfunktechnik (IRT) in M�nchen-Freimann
Tuesday, May 11, 10:00 - 12:30 h
The IRT is the technical research and development department of the public broadcasters of Germany, Austria and Switzerland. Research results in virtual sets for TV productions, the cascading of transmission in MPEG coding, the DAB and DVB transmission control center and multichannel sound were presented.

T11 �Beta Digital� and �Taurus Media Technik�
(Kirch-Group) in M�nchen-Unterf�hring

Tuesday, May 10, 10:00 - 13:00 h
Beta Digital is operating the broadcasting-center via satellite of all digital TV and radio programs of pay-TV (DF 1/ Premiere) and other broadcasters. At Taurus Media Technik, the post-production, restoring and archiving of all movies of the group were demonstrated.

T12 Siemens AG Semiconductors M�nchen (Balanstra�e)
Tuesday, May 11, 14:00 - 17:00 h
New developments for digital signal processing, data storage (Multi Media Card, MMC) and transmission were presented by Siemens Semiconductors. The Multi Media Card is able, to store half an hour of stereo-music.

T13 Bayerischer Rundfunk (BR) Radio Broadcast

T14 SZM Studios (Sende-Zentrum-M�nchen)
Tuesday, May 11, 10:00 - 12:30 h
