AES 106th Convention, Amsterdam, The Netherlands 1998 May 16-19

MUNICH

The MOC Congress Center
It has been two years since the AES Convention was last held in Munich, Germany. At the time the Audio Engineering Society was very pleased with the brand-new MOC Congress Center which ideally suits the societys convention and exhibition needs. The MOC (Munich Order Center), is a large exhibition and conference center in the north of Munich. It is situated on the way to Munichs airport near the Autobahn exit Mnchen-Freimann of A9 Mnchen-Nrnberg. It can be easily reached also by underground (U6). There will be traffic signs and AES signs showing the way to the convention center, during convention time. There is plenty of parking space available at the MOC.

The exhibit space is entirely on one floor. Demo rooms, workshops, papers, and special event facilities (Rooms K1-K4) are conveniently located nearby. The convention center has an office for photocopying services, automatic money change machines, a tourist information counter, and two restaurants.

The City of Munich
Munich is the capital of the state of Bavaria (Bayern), which is in the South of Germany. A center of art, science and culture, the city has kept the heritage of German culture more than other cities. Founded in 1158 by the Saxon Duke Heinrich der Lwe (Henry the Lion), it became very shortly the economic and cultural center of Southern Germany. When the weather conditions blow the Fhn, a warm wind from Italy, over the Alps to Bavaria, the result is a sky of breathtaking white and blue beauty the national colors of Bavaria. Then you might see the snow-covered mountains of the Alps and think you are in a fairytale and you might imagine how the fabulous castles of the Bavarian King Ludwig II came into being.

The landmark of Munich is the Alter Peter, a church near the world famous Viktualienmarkt, a market, where you are able to purchase fruits and vegetables from the Bavarian surroundings as in the old times. But also the younger gothic Frauenkirche with its two high, dominant towers is a prominent part of the city-scape. More impressionable sights of the city are the baroque Theatinerkirche and the Residenz where the Bavarian kings resided and which now houses no less than two opera halls, a theatre and a concert hall. Next to the old and new city halls, the Residenz is the focus and the center of Munich.

Wellknown also is the English Garden (Englischer Garten) and the Zoological Garden in Hellabrunn. Besides its active cultural life, Munich is a congress and fairground city, which is visited by many people every year. Noteworthy of course is the famous annual Oktoberfest, which gives the city its question-able nickname Capital of Beer. In 1972, the Olympic Summer Games took place in Munich.

The city has a multi-faceted industry (breweries, mechanical engineering and automotive industry, electrical and electronics industries, publishing, and in the south the film-city Geiselansteig (the German Hollywood) and numerous museums, of which the Deutsches Museum, a technical museum, is most famous.

Weather
By the beginning of May, spring has usually reached its culmination in South Germany. Flowers and trees are blossoming. But the weather may be bright and sunny as well as rainy and cold in Munich, due to the Alp-mountains near by. The temperature at this time of year is usually above 10C and can easily reach 25C. Because of Munichs altitude (appr. 500m / 1600ft above sea level), evenings and early mornings tend to be rather chilly. Traveling to Munich

Train & Car Travel
Munich is also the main railway junction of Southern Germany, where trains from the North link to the networks of Austria, Italy and Switzerland. The German highways (Autobahn) connect Munich in all directions to the neighbouring countries. In Munich, the new underground train (U6) links the Congress Center MOC with the city. Good express roads in the city (Mittlerer Ring) lead to the MOC. If you arrive at Munich airport, you can take the S-Bahn (S8) to Johanneskirchen, where a taxi will take you to the Convention center in a few minutes. If you prefer to go to your hotel first, please take the Lufthansa Airport Shuttle Bus, which stops at Munich North (Schwabing / Nordfriedhof ) and Munich City Center/ Main Station (Hauptbahnhof ). At Munich North, several hotels are nearby and, if necessary, you can ask the Lufthansa bus driver to call for a taxi, which generally are available when you reach the bus stop Munich North. There is also an underground station nearby where the U6-train will bring you to the Convention Center in less than 10 minutes. Taxis are available around the clock. They may be hired in the street or by telephone. Vacant cabs show a lighted yellow sign. Tips are not included in the fare shown on the taxi meter. Not all taxis accept credit cards, which should be presented to the driver at the start of the journey.

During convention time shuttle buses will run to and from the MOC to some of the AES hotels for your convenience.
