105TH AES CONVENTION HOSTS SEVEN TECHNICAL TOURS

Skywalker Ranch & Dolby Labs Punctuate High Profile Program

SAN FRANCISCO: 105th AES Convention co-chairs David Robinson and Valerie Tyler report that technical tours chairman Chris Cain has coordinated an impressive tour itinerary. The program will take full advantage of the unique resources available in the Bay Area. The convention is being held at San Francisco's Moscone Convention Center, September 26-29.

Tour #1: AUDIO FOR FILM/Skywalker Ranch
The tour schedule kicks off on Saturday, September 26, 1:00- 6:00 p.m., with a rare visit to the George Lucas Skywalker Ranch for a close look at one of the world's top audio-for-film facilities. Following a guided tour of the ranch grounds, the group will be divided into three sections to visit the mixing stages, sound design editorial rooms, and the scoring stage. The tour concludes with a screening of one reel from a major Skywalker production, followed by a discussion of the sound system.

Tour #2: AUDIO FOR MUSIC/Studio Tour
On Sunday, September 27, 9:00 am- 2:30 pm, attendees will have the opportunity to see the famous Bay Area music studios, plus new up-and-coming ones. The tour visits Fantasy, The Record Plant, Tarpan Studios, Spark, Different Fur and others.

Tour #3: AUDIO FOR DIGITAL/DigiDesign
A tour of DigiDesign will take place on Sunday, 2:00- 6:00 pm. At one of the biggest names in Digital Audio, attendees can view digital audio in motion.

Tour #4: AUDIO FOR DVD/Sonic Solutions
On Monday, September 28, 9:00 am- 3:00 pm, Sonic Solutions will host a "mini- seminar" on DVD and a demonstration of DVD authoring technologies. A tour of the facility and a box lunch are included.

Tour #5: AUDIO FOR POST PRODUCTION
Russian Hill Recording, Crescendo! Studios, Music Annex The audio for post production tour will be on Monday, 2:00- 6:00 pm. Attendees will visit the prominent post facilities in the city, including Russian Hill/Crescendo! Studios and The Music Annex. An overview of the post production process and room tours are included.

Tour #6: SOUND REINFORCEMENT/Meyer Sound
Meyer Sound Laboratories will be the destination of this tour, on Tuesday, September 29, 9:00 am- 1:00 pm. It will offer a first-hand look at an important leader in sound reinforcement. In addition to a facility tour and sound demonstration, large format and small format systems will be discussed and displayed.

Tour #7: MULTICHANNEL AUDIO/Dolby Laboratories
The final tour focuses on an industry pioneer and a worldwide leader in multi-channel sound applications with a visit to the famed Dolby Laboratories at its historical Potrero home on Tuesday, 2:00- 6:00 pm. Attendees will also be able to visit Dolby's Brisbane manufacturing facility.

"Our tour itinerary has been designed to provide attendees with a real overview of the diversity of San Francisco's pro audio community," says Chris Cain. "The Bay Area is home to many extraordinary audio facilities, and we are fortunate that they are extending their hospitality to us during the 105th AES Convention."

Attendees can sign up for tours at the Moscone Convention Center at the bus departure area.

Formed in 1948 by a group of concerned audio engineers, the AES counts over 12,000 members throughout U.S., Europe, Japan and the Far East, and serves as the pivotal force in the exchange and dissemination of technical information for the industry.
