W-14 3-d Audio For Multimedia
Monday, September 29, 9:00 am
Chairman: Brian Schmidt, Q-Systems
Panelists: Roger Dressler, Dolby Laboratories, Inc.; Kenneth Ma, Trident Technologies; Brian McDowell, Microsoft; Conrad Maxwell, Chairman, IASIG; Matt Perry, Crystal Semiconductor Corporation

3-D audio has had a hard time making it into the multimedia landscape, often playing second fiddle to graphics. Limitations of processing power and lack of standards for creating 3-D content as well as audio have made a long road for 3-D audio to make its way to mainstream multimedia. Finally, this has changed. Processing power has soared, standards such as Dolby Digital and DirectSound have created authoring standards, and initiatives such as AC97 and USB stand to make high-fidelity multimedia audio a reality. This workshop will include presentations by leaders in the 3-D audio industry who will discuss the current state of 3-D audio for multimedia. A panel discussion with audience participation will follow. Among the topics to be discussed are authoring standards, limitations of 3-D audio technologies, and delivery platforms.

W-15 VST: An Open Software Platform For Digital Audio Workstations

The IEEE 1394 Serial Bus promises to carry hundreds of channels of digital audio, digital video, and control protocols over a single cable between a variety of audio/video devices. This workshop provides an overview of the 1394 standard and explores the special requirements audio places on the bus. A system comprising a variety of 1394 devices will be demonstrated, then carefully dissected so that attendees gain a clear understanding of both the low-level implementation details and high-level system issues. The panel includes representatives from many of the leading developers of 1394 hardware and software technologies.
