Higher Speed Duplication of Eight Track Tapes with Enhanced Dynamic Range

Document Thumbnail

Eight track pre-recorded tape cartridges which are becoming popular popular for the automobile stereo market are capable of having reproduction quality approaching current 4 track 7 1/2 inch per second tapes. Although the tape speed is only 3 3/4 inch per second, and the tracks only 20 thousandths wide, a nearly ideal focused gap field recording technique greatly reduces problems normally associated with the lower tape speed. Bias noise is essentially eliminated. Bias erasure or self demagnetization loss of the high frequencies is reduced to a level approaching unbiased recording so that objectionable high frequency compression effects are diminished. Thickness distortion from bias compromise is negligible. This relatively new recording technique, based on the ideal anhysteretic record process, then lends itself to ultra high speed tape duplication. This technique is described in some detail, performance comparisons against current practice are made and highly advanced duplication equipment capable of producing over 400,000 cartridge tapes per month is explained.
