A Bit-Allocation Scheme for an Embedded and Signal-Adaptive Audio Coder

Document Thumbnail

A new bit-allocation scheme for a wavelet-based audio coder is presented. Embedded zero tree coding EZW is widely used in video compression, taking profit from the similarity across scales of the wavelet transform. The authors have extended this framework to the application of an audio coder, which features signal-adaptive time-frequency tiling. The resulting bit stream not only allows one to stop decoding any time, which is an extremely important feature for Internet applications, but also enables increased audio quality because of a noninteger quantization estimation.:
