Since the early days of magnetic recording, the precise alignment of the magnetically recorded wavefronts perpendicular to the direction of tape travel has presented a difficult problem. The best existing method involves making the sound track visible and checking azimuth with a microscope. It will be shown that a phase cancelling technique presently used for aligning magnetic gaps in multitrack recording can be extended to permit a precise adjustment of recorded azimuth.
