Polar Pattern Measurement and Representation with Surface Spherical Harmonics

Document Thumbnail

In this paper we present a new method of representing transducer polar patterns using Surface Spherical Harmonics. This technique has the advantage of providing an accurate representation of the polar pattern which can easily provide the polar pattern at an arbitrary angle. Furthermore, the representation can be efficiently measured. The paper explains Surface Spherical Harmonics and presents means of efficiently deriving them from measured data. The implication and applications are then discussed and finally some results of the analysis applied to polar pattern measurements are presented.
