Electromagnetic Compatibility-Design and Measurements for a Large Studio Complex in Karlsruhe

Document Thumbnail

At the Center for Art and Media Technology (ZKM), various studios for music, speech, video and multipurpose theater were recently completed and were interconnected by an audio routing system (ARS) which must fulfuill high requirements for electromagnetic compatibility. As early as the planning stage, the total grounding, cabling, and studio installations had to be considered, including the influence of a nearby tram station and photovoltaic system. The grounding necessities, ground-loop resistances, detection of undesired ground loops, and interferences on microphone cables are described. The new ZKM opened with the 1997 Karlsruhe Mediale event which combined light, sound, and video performances.
