This paper examines the usefulness and relevance of knowledge obtained from investigations into the characteristics of equipment used in the recording of early sound carriers. Such knowledge may be obtained from various sources which will be analyzed in respect to their relevance and veracity. Some examples of misleading information will also be given. Suggestions will be made for procedures to preserve the information and enhance its usefulness.
