The Suedwestfunk (SWR) and the Mass Storage Systems in its Radio Sound Archives: Concepts and some Performance/Cost aspects

Document Thumbnail

A two-year pilot project performed 1996-1997 at the former Suedwestrundfunk Baden-Baden gave evidence that nowadays digital mass storage technology is available and ready for application in radio sound archives. Based on the findings, its continuation at the recent founded Suedwestrundfunk which came into existence by the merger of SWF Baden-Baden and SDR Stuttgart is described. This new corporation owns three locations of equal importance, each of them having a sound archive in the same order of scale. This caused the problem of whether a decentral mass storage installation should be preferred to a central one. Appropriate solutions are explained and discussed under technical as well as economic aspects.
