This paper presents an overview of the technologies adopted in multichannel audio coding. New trends, including increased audio sample resolution and sampling rates, will be discussed. Different channel configurations, their advantages and disadvantages, and their impact on the system data rates and capacity will be examined. Emerging audio formats like DVD-Audio will be introduced. Finally, applications of multichannel audio and new directions in music will be examined.
